Lockouts

Can you open a door that only has a deadlatch?

Yes. A deadlatch locks automatically when the door shuts, which is why so many people get caught out. Most open quickly without damage.

Call straight away and tell us it’s running. Keep the area clear and don’t try to force a window. Most of these are opened quickly.

Units and strata

Who is responsible for my unit front door lock?

Usually the owner of the unit. Common property doors, entry gates and fobs are the body corporate’s responsibility. Check your by-laws if you’re unsure.

A set of locks where each key opens only its own door, while a master key opens all of them. It suits unit buildings, offices and businesses with staff.

Holiday rentals

Are keypad locks secure enough for a holiday home?

Good quality ones are, provided they’re fitted properly and the codes are changed between guests. Most still have a key override for emergencies.

Whenever keys go missing, a manager changes, or you can’t account for every copy. With a keypad lock, change the code after each booking instead.

Salt air and weather

Why do my locks stop working near the beach?

Salt and fine sand get into the cylinder and corrode the pins and springs. A dry lubricant and a yearly service help, and marine-grade hardware lasts longer.

The door has dropped or swollen, so the latch or bolt no longer lines up. Adjusting the hinges or the strike plate usually fixes it without a new lock.

Car keys

Can a locksmith copy a smart key or push-start key?

For many makes, yes. The new key is programmed to the car on site. Some European models still need the dealer.

Usually. We can cut a fresh blade to fit your existing remote, which is much cheaper than a whole new key.

Renting

Do I need permission to add a deadlock to a rental?

Yes. Any lock changes or additions during a tenancy need the owner’s agreement, and the owner must be given a key. The Residential Tenancies Authority website has the details.

Since 1 September 2024, Queensland’s minimum housing standards require working locks or latches on external windows and doors that can be reached without a ladder.

Choosing a locksmith

How do I check a locksmith is licensed?

Ask for their licence number and look it up on the Office of Fair Trading register. Queensland locksmiths are licensed as security equipment installers.

Some quote only the call-out fee and add labour and parts later. Ask for the call-out fee and the likely total before they come, and agree the final price before work starts.
